Job Description

International Minerals Carlsbad LLC is seeking an experienced Mine Operator to support underground mine production, development, construction, and rehabilitation activities.

This position performs excavation work required for major underground projects, rehabilitates entryways, ventilation systems, roadways, and water systems, and supports the underground core drilling program. The Mine Operator will also operate conventional and continuous mining equipment in varying ground and operating conditions.

The ideal candidate has extensive knowledge of underground mining operations, strong continuous mining experience, and a demonstrated commitment to safety, teamwork, equipment care, and operational performance.

Essential Responsibilities

• Perform excavation work supporting underground mine development and construction projects.
• Operate conventional and continuous mining equipment.
• Operate mining equipment in adverse conditions, including unstable back, elevated mining heights, and inclined areas.
• Recognize safety hazards and take appropriate action to correct or report unsafe conditions.
• Maintain safe, clean, and orderly underground work areas.
• Rehabilitate underground entryways and areas affected by poor or unstable ground conditions.
• Rebuild and maintain underground roadways.
• Support the installation, rehabilitation, and maintenance of mine ventilation and water systems.
• Establish and maintain proper ventilation within assigned underground work areas.
• Operate core drilling equipment in support of the underground drilling program.
• Perform carpentry work, including constructing bulkheads and other underground structures.
• Perform assigned work from scaffolding or elevated work areas when required.
• Use power tools, welding equipment, cutting equipment, pumps, generators, and other tools required to complete assigned work.
• Inspect assigned equipment and report mechanical, operational, or safety concerns.
• Follow work instructions and learn new equipment, processes, and procedures.
• Plan assigned work and exercise sound independent judgment when addressing operational issues.
• Identify and correct problems within the scope of the position.
• Demonstrate initiative, accountability, leadership, and effective teamwork.
• Encourage crew members to comply with all safety rules, procedures, and personal protective equipment requirements.
• Perform additional underground mining and production duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED, or trade school education.
• At least two years of underground mining experience.
• Extensive knowledge of underground mining operations.
• Experience operating continuous mining equipment under challenging or adverse conditions.
• Experience mining unstable back, working at elevated mining heights, and operating on inclines.
• Knowledge of underground mine ventilation systems and the ability to establish proper ventilation.
• Ability to recognize, evaluate, and respond appropriately to underground safety hazards.
• Ability to read, write, follow instructions, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
• Ability to plan work and exercise independent judgment and decision making.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability to learn and follow new processes, procedures, and equipment requirements.
• Ability to use the tools and equipment required to perform assigned duties.
• Strong initiative, accountability, leadership, and team skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Underground undercutter and mine development experience.
• Welding and cutting experience.
• Core drilling experience.
• Experience rehabilitating underground roadways, entryways, ventilation systems, or water systems.
• Experience working around hazardous or unstable ground conditions.
• Experience operating multiple types of underground production and support equipment.

Equipment and Tools

The Mine Operator may be required to operate or work with equipment and tools that include:

• Continuous miners and conventional mining equipment
• Roof bolters and high-back bolters
• Ramcars, scoops, loaders, cutters, and mantrips
• Core drills and other drilling equipment
• Powder wagons and foam machines
• Scaling machines
• Power hand tools
• Welders and cutting torches
• Generators and sump pumps

Physical Requirements

The Mine Operator must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including:

• Performing physically demanding work in an underground mining environment.
• Lifting and moving materials weighing up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
• Standing and walking for extended periods.
• Frequently stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and balancing.
• Climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and expanded metal walkways.
• Working occasionally from scaffolding, elevated platforms, or baskets up to 100 feet above ground level.
• Operating mobile equipment, mining machinery, power tools, and industrial equipment.
• Performing repetitive movements involving the hands, wrists, and fingers.
• Communicating effectively in high-noise environments.
• Wearing a respirator and all other required personal protective equipment.

Work Environment

This position works underground and may also perform duties in indoor and outdoor areas. Working conditions may include extreme heat, high humidity, significant noise, vibration, water, confined spaces, limited ventilation, and exposure to dust, fumes, gases, odors, oils, chemicals, moving equipment, electrical hazards, and unstable ground conditions.

The Mine Operator must comply with all safety rules, operating procedures, training requirements, and personal protective equipment standards.
